Immobiles The art-immobiles are endlessly fascinating. A suspended assemblage of old found objects with a new life. These pieces of chairs, tables, discs, cylinders, glass and metal objects interact in a completely new art form. Art-immobiles are unique in the art world. First conceived in 1973 after years of hanging mobiles against the wall, new shapes began to appear. My first immobiles were all metal vertical forms that were simply static mobiles working in atriums, high narrow spaces, and even a couple in museums. In the 1980's and 1990's wood and found objects became components. The consistent black color brings an expression of order and richness to these familiar fragments of our lives. The art-immobile is life suspended. All the things we recognize and remember in our lives are before us again. Art has a way of conjuring up those feelings. There's a magical dream quality to seeing old possesions in my new suspended form of the future, The Art-Immobile. |
